The TRUE Origin of 420: Weed Day

420 does not commemorate the death of beloved Bob Marley. Many weed enthusiasts believe that the origin of 420 came from Marley’s death. However, Bob didn’t die on 4/20, he died on May, 11th 1981. 4/20 is also not Bob Marley’s birthday (another speculation). Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, and Jim Morrison also did not die on 420, another myth debunked.

Many speculate that the day of 420 has a connection with Greatful Dead. While this is partly true because the Deadheads spread wake and bake message of 420 around the country. It is thought to be believed that Greatful Dead used to stay in room 420 of every hotel room they stayed at, but this has been proven untrue.

420 is not the police code for “marijuana smoking in progress”. 420 is however a real code for homicide in Las Vegas and in the TV series CSI. Interesting! Some people also think that 420 is the California penal code relating to marijuana, wrong! Section 420 of the California Penal Code refers to obstructing entry on public land.

Some green thumb stoners think that 420 is the best time to plant marijuana, this is hardly true. The best times vary from region to region, and with modern grow houses, you could successfully begin planting in the middle of winter, even if it’s 20 degrees outside.

So if none of these are the true reasons behind 420, then WHAT is? Well, the birth of 420 dates back to the early 70’s when it became the hour for cannabis consumption among High School students in San Rafael California. Even in the mellow Marin County, the stronghold for the Greatful Dead, no grants were made to allow sparking up during school hours. A group of stoners that called themselves the “Waldos” would pass each other in the halls and send knowing glances and mutter ‘420 Lewis!”. In an interview with the San Francisco Chronicle in 2000, one of the students said that it started off as a joke between a group of friends and then it quickly became so much more and started to mean more things like “do you have any?” or “do I look stoned?”. The students used the code word 420 for their pot activities and the time the activities would take place. The group would meet on school grounds in pre-planned locations at 4:20 p.m and get high, it is also rumored that they would wander the grounds in search of a magical marijuana forest. The time of 4:20 was perfect for the high schoolers as they were out of school and most of the kids’ parents were still at work. It was one hour of unsupervised freedom. 420 was a code that the kids could use in front of their parents to signal smoking time and it would go unsuspected to any adults. The term took flight and spread worldwide, possibly all thanks to the Deadhead followers. What began as a simple code to get high between some teenagers, is a now a term that is used across the globe and it is imprinted on T-Shirts, stickers, mugs, and just about everything else. Who would have thought?!

The story of the Greatful Dead followers (also known as Deadheads) emphasizing the 420 term begins with a flyer handed out at a Greatful Dead show Christmas week in Oakland California, 1990. Steven Bloom was walking through the parking lot of the show venue – and if you ever went to a Dead show, then you know the hippies gathered before every show- when a Deadhead handed him a yellow flier.  The message read: “We are going to meet at 4:20 on 4/20 for 420-ing in Marin County at the Bolinas Ridge sunset spot on Mt. Tamalpais,”  Bloom was a then reporter for High Times magazine and had never heard of “420-ing” before. The flier was complete with a 420 backstory about the high schoolers from San Rafael, California in the late 70’s.

The 420 term was wide-spread and greatly used by the end of the 1970’s. The Deadheads spread it like a virus from their San Rafael grounds. Within a decade, pot heads were using it across the country and even around the world. It quickly became a “hip” term to describe marijuana use and “getting high”.  As early as 1990 the stoner bible High Times started using the 420 term and later bought out the website and on the active site you can find weed related videos, news, tips, activism, and conspiracy links (such as “Will the LAPD have armed drones hunting suspects?”).

So there we have it, for all who may have had other speculations or heard other stories. 420 once started as a code between some high schooler friends in California, and now in 2017 it is celebrated worldwide by marijuana enthusiasts, when the time on the clock reads 4:20 and once a year on April 20th.

Happy 420!

Stoner Must-Haves

Every stoner has their basic needs, right? Here are just a few basic things that every marijuana user should keep on hand.

A one-hitter. While this may seem silly and maybe even pointless, a one hitter is ideal when you are trying to be low key and you are on the go. A one hitter can be a simple straight tube pipe, or they make ones that look like a cigarette and they can be picked up for pretty cheap too, starting at $10 and up varying on the design and type of one hitter.

A hand pipe, you are always going to need a hand pipe. There are thousands to choose from and prices vary. You can get a special, padded carrying case to store your pipes in, and you can choose from glass or metal pipes. I personally prefer glass pipes, the bud tastes so much better out of glass. Besides, you can find way cooler glass pipes! The hand pipes come in many different sizes, shapes, and colors and can be found at any smoke shop. I have a personal collection of 4 glass pipes.

A bong, because what is better than bong rips? You want to find a bong that has an ice catcher; you can put ice in the bong for a chilled, smooth hit. Bongs are great for a rushed morning to get that quick marijuana relief, or if you are just trying to get relief faster in general. My favorite way to smoke is by blunt or bong.

Rolling papers, or cones are also a good item to always have handy if you are a chronic smoker. Rolling papers are good to have within to you so you can just roll one up and spark it, cones work great as well if you aren’t all that great at rolling a joint or a blunt. Swisher Sweets are perfect, plus they taste good AND smell good. You can get different flavors like strawberry, blueberry, and mango. You can use a cone, which is just a pre-rolled tube, and pack it full of your favorite bud to smoke, and it actually is quite simple and not time consuming.

A lighter, and preferably not a white one! The legend says that white lighters bring a slew of bad luck and unfortunate events. I mean Bob Marley did pass away while using a white lighter to blaze… Coincidence, or not? Of course, there are more urban legends to validate that white lighters mean bad luck, but let’s stay on topic here. You will always want to have a lighter handy for your smoking sessions, you never want to be searching for a lighter after you get everything ready to medicate, it is annoying and takes up more time than needed.

A glass jar, a pill bottle with no label, or really anything that you can put marijuana into that has a sealing lid. Although the use of marijuana is legal on a recreational level in Nevada and five other states, it is still against the law to have your marijuana in a zip0log baggie or just laying out. The law statutes state that you can carry marijuana on your person as long as it is in a sealed container. So, you will need to invest in a mason jar or you can get little tubes with a pop-top lid from the dispensaries, if you want to avoid any trouble with local law enforcement, plus you always want to properly store your weed to avoid it drying out or simply getting lost, because that would be tragic.

A grinder, which can typically be found at your local smoke shop ranging in price anywhere from $5 to $20 and more, just depends on the size of the grinder, the design, and the brand that you choose. A grinder is a go-to stoner tool because it makes for easier, and quicker smoking. You put your bud in the top of the grinder, (the lid and the bottom of the top chamber have teeth and this is what grinds up the weed) put the lid back on, the metal ones are usually magnetic so you don’t actually have to screw the lid on, and you can twist the lid both ways to grind up the buds. In just a quick few seconds, you have perfect ground up cannabis that can then be used to roll a blunt or a joint, or back a bowl of fresh greens. Most of the better metal grinders have 3 units; the top part grinds the bud, the middle section stores the grinded greens, and in the bottom there is a screen so the kief that falls from the buds when it gets ground up, catches and collects in the bottom. Kief if extremely fine, so it will take you some time to get a decent amount of kief to smoke up!

Marijuana, of course! As a stoner, you always want to keep a stash of your most favorite buds. A stoner’s bright day can turn to gloom once they realize their stash is almost gone… I always have at least two stashes, I have one of my all time favorite bud, or the better of what I have, and then I have my “eh, it’s alright” stuff. Stoner rule #5629: ALWAYS have pot. Also, call up a fellow stoner buddy stoner rule #7914: Sharing IS caring!

Music, a great atmosphere, and amazing friends. Unless of course, you enjoy smoking alone. I myself even enjoy smoking alone from time to time, but having other people to live the experience with you makes it that much better. An endless supply of laughs and out of this world thoughts, what could be better? Not to mention, if you find stoner friends who follow the stoner etiquette rules, they will share their goods with you. After all, a friend with weed is a friend indeed.

My Angel Baby

One in four pregnancies end in miscarriage. The estimated rate of miscarriages in the US is 50% in all conceptions and 15-20% in all confirmed pregnancies. Most miscarriages occur within the first 12 weeks of pregnancy and research shows that the risk of miscarriage drops dramatically throughout the first trimester of pregnancy, usually from 9.4% at six weeks to 0.7% at 10 weeks. If you have suffered from a miscarriage in the past, your chances of having another one is 25%, and if you have had three consecutive miscarriages in a row, you have a 40% chance of having another miscarriage. There are several factors that can cause a miscarriage, but the direct cause is unknown. Miscarriages can occur up to 23 weeks, although your chances go down throughout the pregnancy, after 23 weeks and the fetus is over one point, it is considered a still birth.
